The #1 must have to love raising a new puppy?

I tell anyone buying one of my puppies if you want to enjoy puppyhood, then the number one item you need to buy is a puppy playpen.

Puppies still need a lot of time to rest, but if a lot is going on around them, they may not stop to rest. Getting a puppy too tired or overstimulated can cause anxiousness and trouble making activity. They may start to chew on things they shouldn’t to calm nerves, and don’t listen to commands.

It is important to not give puppy full run of the house, give it boundaries, & give it rest times. If you aren’t hands on or eyes on puppy then they go in the playpen. this is not mean, it’s like putting your baby in a crib to keep them safe. Puppies will chew on anything whether it can hurt them or not, in a controlled space they can only chew on what you give them.

It also makes potty training so much easier and quicker actually. The dog learns the routine of out to potty, play, potty then pen to rest. They learn to be calm and patient without having to be entertained constantly, and they learn peace in their space. It can create less anxiety because the dog learns they are safe and okay in their space even without touching or seeing their human.

I like to place the pen in an area where you spend most your time. They learn people can be in the room and they can lay calmly and don’t have to be the center of attention always. If they are loud and whiny don’t even look at them, go in and out of the room a lot without a word or looking at them. They will learn it is not their naughty actions that grant them a pass out of the pen. When, and only when, they are quiet you instantly reward verbally and go get them out.

Having a place to put your pup while you are busy doing chores, sleeping at night, have guests and can’t keep an eye on the dog, or have to run to the store will be the difference between staying sane and enjoying the silly fun mischievous puppy stage that they grow out of so quickly.

If you are ever frustrated with puppy they go in the pen, it’s their zone. Only grant more open boundaries as they earn more trust in small amounts. Puppy teeth until about 1 to 1 1/2 years old. They don’t need full access to the house until adulthood, after they’ve gone through puppy and teenage years.

It will keep your house from being chewed up or used as the potty. Set your pup up for success & you can say I loved raising my puppy.
